The NEW  Glen Gazette

Written for, by, and about the residents of The Glen of Pacific Grove

FROM THE EDITOR…..

Candy Pollock

A writer I am not, but I do know I’d like to see The Glen Gazette become a fun newsletter with many people contributing items of interest.  If you experience an unusual happening, know of a funny antidote, have a family milestone, or just wish to relay an item of community interest, write it down and drop it in The Glen Mailbox.  This first edition was put together quickly, but improvement will come with each issue.  So…here we go!

HELLOS AND GOODBYES:

It is always nice to meet new neighbors, but at the same time, that means saying goodbye to someone else.  April will mean goodbye to Todd and Ann Bolem and their infant daughter Catherine in Unit # 88.  They have been wonderful neighbors and we wish them the best on their move to Hawaii.

A couple has purchased unit 88 and will be moving in.  We will introduce them in next month’s newsletter.

GARDENING:      Rodger & Sharon Axt

The Glen Gardening Committee

Replanting continues, with the gardening staff working in “zones” as they plant. If you have made a request or are waiting to see a new plant or two outside your door, have faith, we will get there. The replanting occurs as time, weather, and our budget permits.

Several new trees now grace our landscape: two Flowering Plum trees, a Coast Live Oak, and a Fat Albert Blue Spruce (the Blue Spruce courtesy of a friend/horticulturalist).

A reminder:  If you have any gardening requests or concerns, please write us a note: include Unit #, and contact name and phone number. Put the written request in The Glen mailbox.

WILDLIFE SIGHTINGS:

Has everyone seen the Double Crested Cormorant?  Several weeks ago, he arrived and stayed awhile. He is gone now but seems to return periodically and will stay a couple days.  It is fun to watch him fish; diving under and coming up a minute or so later in a totally different spot!  Occasionally, he will surface with his catch in mouth!

Jim and Shirley Ray wrote:

Double Crested Cormorants are common for the area and usually prefer inland fresh water lakes and streams, although it would not be uncommon to see
a few hanging around the beaches and surf.  Most of the Cormorants in the ocean area are either ‘Brandts’ or ‘Pelagic’ and they are smaller and
more black. They are the ones that you see sitting in large groups on the rocks off the beaches.

Ann  Gallenson says:

Last year was a good year for Cormorants on the Peninsula. Point Lobos had a record number of Brandt Cormorants breeding and Elkhorn Slough had good number of Double Crested in their rookery. I noticed on my slough tour last month (I lead a monthly walk at Elkhorn) that there were a record number of juvenile (first year) Cormorants hanging around - a bit unusual. I suspect that our new guest will depart as we get a little closer to breeding seasons.

I continue to see the fox late at night, so he is still about doing whatever it is fox do out that late!

GARAGE SALE:

It’s spring cleaning time and that means the annual Glen Garage Sale. It will be one Saturday in May, but the date is not yet set.  Would you like to participate?  Leave your information in The Glen mailbox, or let Candy in #110 know if you are.  The same rules will apply as in the past; sale will be from 8AM until noon, garage door up if participating and down if not, and no cars inside The Glen unless picking up something large; buyers will need to walk the circle.  All participants will share the cost of the newspaper add, so the more the better.  This is a great time to get rid of unwanted stuff.  I will try to arrange a charity pick up following the sale to help get rid of remaining items.

Would you like to help with the sale but don’t plan to participate?  Just leave a note in The Glen mailbox with that information.  This is always a fun day for all.

THE GLEN BOOK CLUB:  Submitted by Ann Gallenson

The Barbary Plague: the Black Death in Victorian San Francisco by Marilyn Chase

The author transports her readers to San Francisco at the turn of the Twentieth Century to witness the historical, political and human impacts of the bubonic plagues on San Francisco from 1900 through 1910.  This elegantly written historical narrative reveals the medical and political battlefield of public health and disease control. The book displays the complexity of epidemics all the way to National structure and law. The greater outcome of disease and denial is better health, building, and legal practices and the more sinister side is that of a deeply embedded epidemic that spread inland and could reoccur at any time. Once the story is told, the author explains its significance to contemporary health and epidemic issues including HIV, Aids, and SARS. This compelling book is a must read for anyone interested in the history of San Francisco, medicine, science, politics, journalism, prejudice and the human experience.

On a lighter note, our next book is the novel Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons by Lorna Landvik.  We will discuss the book on April 5th at 7:00 PM. April’s meeting is at Candy Pollock’s home (#110). Any woman interested in joining the club can contact Sharon Axt or just join us at the next meeting.

ITEM OF CONCERN:

We need your help. Recently in The Glen, six dogs and one cat have been acutely ill, all requiring veterinary care, with one dog needing hospitalization. If your pet has also been sick, please contact Sharon Axt at #13. If there is a pattern to these illnesses, we can advise our respective vets in order to aid in finding a diagnosis.

Thanks for your assistance.

CLASSIFIED:

Something around that you would like to sell?  Write out the information to include item description, price, and your phone number and drop it in The Glen mailbox.
