RE: NOTICE

We thought all members of The Glen of Pacific Grove Homeowners Association would be interested in the status of our lake.

The problems have been numerous, but basically like so many other areas in the country, our drought is the main culprit. You may or may not be aware that the water in the lake comes from runoff from the watershed in higher elevation properties. As a result we have no new water coming into the lake due to lack of rain.

The board has been working for over two years on ways to to mitigate the algae. We have consulted with a number of private and governmental experts in the field on various methods. We have considered dredging the entire lake and found the cost prohibitive (over $80,000) so have also reviewed alternative methods. Interestingly, we have recently learned much of what we see now is not algae, but is Sego Pond Weed (a sub-aquatic plant) and Duckweed (the very green substance that is on top).

We have also have contracted a company to come in twice a month and remove as much algae and grass as possible to keep it at least in manageable levels. We even purchased a small dingy to help the crew get rid of it. And we hired PSTS to remove sediment below the waterfall that was creating an island.

Because the water in the lake drains into the Monterey Bay, we are getting advice and approvals from various private companies and government agencies. This is obviously complicated and time consuming. We are continuing to work on the issue, and are encouraged we might have a solution in the near future. We are trying to do the best we can to manage this wonderful feature of The Glen and appreciate your patience!
